It’s time for the nominations for this year’s annual AGS Awards, to be awarded at this year’s AGM. All categories are listed and we invite members to nominate anyone they feel is deserving of an award. A citation must be completed for each nomination, please find the form available to download below. All nominations will then be reviewed by the awards committee.

SOCIETY AWARDS & CRITERIA

The Lyttel Trophy

Originally given by Rev Professor E S Lyttel, Society President in 1944:

  • It is to be awarded on the broad ground of meritorious work for alpines and such work, maybe of various kinds.
  •  It may be awarded to someone who regularly exhibits at AGS Shows, or to someone who only occasionally exhibits alpines of merit.
  • It may be awarded to someone who does not exhibit, but is prominently successful with difficult alpines; or to someone who has enriched the alpine world by collecting new or rare alpines of high merit.
  • It is not for competitive display of alpines, for which cups, medals and prizes already exist.

The selectors are past recipients who are members of the Alpine Garden Society and the President. Nominations may be made by any member.

The Sir William & Lady Lawrence Award

  • An international award, instituted in 2000, named after the founding President of the Society, Sir William Lawrence, President of the Society. A cash sum and book plate presented annually to a person who works in professional horticulture and who has made a significant contribution in their work with alpines (cultivation, research etc).The Kath Dryden Award
  • To recognise meritorious work and expertise in advancing our knowledge and understanding of the cultivation of a genus or group of alpine plants.‘Group’ here is defined as a collection of related plants (eg hardy bulbs, hardy ferns, hardy terrestrial orchids etc.)

The Ferrier Charlton Award

  • To recognise outstanding work for the Society in an administrative or managerial capacity.The award is open to serving officers at national or local level, or anyone serving the Society in an administrative capacity.

Award of Honour

To be awarded to those members who have undertaken sterling work on behalf of the Society, not necessarily during the year, but over a period of time. More than one Award of Honour may be awarded in any one year.

Local Group Awards

  • Instigated in 2000 to recognise outstanding service within a Local Group over a number of years, the impact of which has been felt more widely than just in the local area.
  • The most outstanding nominee for a local group award (someone who it is felt has achieved the most in their time working for a local group) will also receive the Silver Jubilee Trophy donated by the Sussex Weald Group.

Website Award

  • To recognise the best contribution to the Society’s Website during the previous year.NB It is permissible that this award may be awarded to the same person more than once to recognise contributions made in different years.

LITERARY AWARDS:

Members of the Awards Sub-Committee are allowed to put forward nominations for the Literary Awards on the day of the meeting of the Awards Sub-Committee.

The Clarence Elliott Memorial Award Cup

  • The best article published in The Alpine Gardener during 2024.

The Lionel & Joyce Bacon Award

  • The Best Practical Alpine Gardening Article published in The Alpine Gardener during 2024.

The Christopher Grey-Wilson Award

  •  The Best Feature Article published in The Alpine Gardener during 2024 (must contain a minimum of ten photographs) and is to recognise photographic excellence in an article.

 

All nominations with accompanying citations to be emailed to the AGS office by the 19th September 2025.
