What is the AGS?
Welcome to the Alpine Garden Society!
The AGS is one of the largest gardening communities in the world. Since 1929, our mission has been to showcase all-things alpine and inspire everyone to grow these amazing plants in their own gardens.
What is an Alpine?
We’re not fussy when it comes to alpines in the Society. Whether it’s big and blousy or small and sophisticated, we have a passion for any small plant that can happily survive outside in a typical British winter.
Can I Grow Them in the Garden?
Yes! You can use alpines for structure, you can use them for habitat, you can use them as groundcover or as a centrepiece. And if you’re short on space, alpines thrive in small troughs and window boxes. Better still, you can have alpines in flower all year round. Alpines are just the perfect garden plants!
What We Do
The AGS is all about celebrating this fascinating group of plants and helping people to enjoy them in their own gardens. We hold shows and events around the country, run an annual seed exchange, host a network of local groups across the UK and beyond and organise tours so that anyone can be captivated by alpines in the wild.
As a charity, we also play our part in protecting the natural world. Whether it is in pioneering ‘alpines for wildlife’ in our own garden at Pershore, supporting conservation projects at home and abroad or helping to train the next generation of alpine experts, we’re working to ensure that future generations can enjoy alpines in their gardens and in the wild.
So Why Not Join Us?
I want the Society to show people that no matter what sort of space they have, we’re the Society for them, these are the plants for you! (Rob Amos, AGS President, on BBC Gardeners’ World)
Join us today for a little as £4 a month and enjoy everything that the AGS has to offer. Whatever your interest, there is something in the Society for you!
